Veolia North America “Flips the Switch” on a Bright Future in Arkansas

Veolia ceremonial shovels are seen, ready to symbolize the beginning of a significant reforestation project at Veolia Gum Springs

Veolia North America’s commitment to the environment took center stage in the media spotlight on October 9, when the company announced a series of new initiatives that will make the plant the most sustainable operation of its kind in the U.S.

A gathering of more than 130 people, including media, state environmental officials and local community leaders, took part in the “Celebration of Sustainability” highlighting the new initiatives, including:

  • A recently completed 5MW solar panel farm that will help supply clean electricity to the plant
  • A comprehensive forest management program, including over 600 acres of active reforestation around the plant, with over 110,000 tree plantings planned in 2025
  • Advanced technology for monitoring biodiversity and wildlife in the woods and waterways surrounding the plant
  • New technology for capturing waste heat at the plant and converting it to electricity

The new initiatives will help the plant achieve several sustainability goals, including reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

At the celebration, Veolia, state and local leaders “flipped” a ceremonial light switch to mark the activation of the new solar array, and also helped plant the first sapling for the forest management program.
